Arne Slot's first season at Liverpool could face challenges as Wataru Endo expressed his wish to play for Japan in the upcoming Olympic Games.
The 31-year-old midfielder is under consideration as one of the over-age players allowed in the predominantly under-23 tournament. The Paris Games' football event, scheduled from July 24 to August 10, would require Endo to miss much of the pre-season.
In an interview with ABEMA Sports Time, Endo stated, "I'm also kind of wondering what will happen. Nothing has been decided yet, but if I'm selected, I'd like to participate.
Although the Olympics are not governed by FIFA, Liverpool has the authority to prevent Endo's participation. However, sources believe the player is likely to be released if called up. Endo's potential inclusion in Go Oiwa's squad, which will be announced on July 3, could make him the first Japanese player to compete in three Olympic Games.
This situation could also affect Liverpool's plans, as Egypt is eager to call up Mohamed Salah. Salah, who played in the 2012 London Games but was held back from the Tokyo Games in 2021, may be granted permission this time, especially if Endo participates.
