Despite speculative connections to Liverpool and discussions with Arne Slot, Feyenoord defender David Hancko has dismissed the possibility of transferring to Anfield.
Ever since Slot took over as head coach, Hancko has frequently been suggested as a potential recruit to follow his former manager. This speculation was reinforced by earlier statements from the defender's agent, who confirmed in January that there had been "contact" with Liverpool.
With the ability to play as a centre-back or left-back, Hancko could be a wise addition for the Reds, especially when considering bolstering both roles. However, in an interview with vi.nl during Slovakia's participation in the Euros, the 26-year-old expressed reservations about a transfer to Liverpool following his conversation with Slot.
"I believe that in three years, he will be recognized as one of the world's top coaches," Hancko stated. "I can envision that because I am aware of his accomplishments with us, and now he has the largest stage to demonstrate his capabilities. I have great confidence in him and his team. My appreciation is genuine and not because I anticipate joining him at Liverpool, which seems improbable.
After the season ended, we spoke a few times, but it appears they are not seeking a player in my role, so a move to Liverpool is not expected. Nonetheless, I wish him all the best; he is truly an exceptional coach" Over his managerial career, Slot has relied on only three players more than Hancko – Lutsharel Geertruida, Gernot Trauner, and Justin Bijlow – with Hancko making 92 appearances under him at Feyenoord.
In his interview with vi.nl, Hancko praised the 45-year-old, stating he "changed his career" and clearly regards him as a top coach. "You always look forward to training with him," he commented. "His playing style and the videos he presents in team meetings are very professional." While Hancko's move to Liverpool is not expected, his remark that the club is not seeking a player in his position may raise eyebrows.
Despite this, it's widely recognized that the Reds need more depth at centre-back and left-back, positions that Feyenoord's number 33 could occupy, especially with uncertainty surrounding Kostas Tsimikas' future. However, one should not take Hancko's statements as definitive; it's possible that Slot was merely softening the blow.
