Reina, 41, wants 'last chapter' after Villarreal exit

Chris Stuart

At 41, former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is poised to "write the last chapter" of his career following his departure from Spanish club Villarreal.

Reina returned to the La Liga team in 2022 and celebrated his 1,000th competitive match last year. A member of Spain's victorious 2010 World Cup team, Reina has an extensive career across Europe with clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Napoli, and AC Milan, including a loan period at Aston Villa in 2019-2020.

"Saying farewell to what has been, is, and will forever be my home is not easy," Reina remarked, reflecting on his time at Villarreal from 2002 to 2005.

He now seeks a new opportunity that will allow him to conclude his career on a high note, feeling ready and inspired for the challenge. Reina, who began his journey at Barcelona and will turn 42 in August, also boasts European Championship triumphs from 2008 and 2012.
