Liverpool's most senior player has renewed his contract for another season, declaring, "Boots staying firmly on for another Season"

Chris Stuart

Jay Spearing the midfielder is heading into his third season as player-coach in the academy at 35.

Spearing came off the bench as Liverpool U21s beat non-league Chorley 2-0 in their pre-season friendly on Saturday, and confirmed the extension of his career afterwards. He wrote on Instagram "Boots staying firmly on for another season".

Spearing returned to Liverpool FC in 2022 where he has been in the club's youth ranks, coaching the U18's and featuring for the U21's as player/coach when needed.

He has received praise for his contributions to Liverpool's youth, especially for his role as an additional player in training and matches.

His continued commitment to playing with the U21s follows a season where he appeared 15 times, including three starts, and was an unused substitute in six matches.

His on-field role for the 2024/25 season is expected to be limited, yet his ongoing presence in the squad is significant, especially following Adrian's departure this summer. With Adrian leaving Anfield after his contract ended, the average age of Arne Slot's squad has decreased, as the goalkeeper turned 37 in January.

Now, the senior-most player in Slot's team is Virgil van Dijk, aged 33, with Mo Salah, Alisson, Wataru Endo, and Andy Robertson being the only other players over 30.

Jay Spearing remains an active member of the squad, entering his third season as a player-coach in the academy at age 35.

Spearing was a substitute in Liverpool U21s' 2-0 victory over non-league Chorley in their pre-season friendly on Saturday and confirmed his career extension thereafter.
