Liverpool owners FSG pull OUT of talks to buy cash-strapped French side Bordeaux - as club face relegation to the third tier amid financial woes

Bordeaux's situation worsened on Tuesday as Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool, declared they were halting talks with the French club, which risks dropping to the third division.

Bordeaux is contesting its relegation from Ligue 2 due to financial issues and has been notified by FSG of their decision to discontinue discussions.

The choice is attributed mainly to the substantial future costs of the stadium and the overall economic climate of French football, according to the statement.

FSG had been engaging with Bordeaux's owner, Gerard Lopez, for weeks and participated in the club's session with the DNCG, French football's financial regulator, on July 9.

"After thorough and positive talks with all parties involved, Fenway Sports Group has decided not to proceed with the purchase of FC Girondins de Bordeaux," stated the American group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Liverpool.

Bordeaux, a Ligue 2 team, will not become the newest addition to Fenway Sports Group's portfolio.

Liverpool's proprietors, including principal owner John W Henry, have concluded ongoing discussions.

Club president Gerard Lopez, who had been negotiating with FSG, must now seek an alternative solution to prevent demotion to the third tier.

Insiders close to the negotiations mentioned the operational costs of Bordeaux's Matmut Atlantique stadium and the unsatisfactory results of the Ligue 1 TV rights discussions as factors in the decision.

The general election has opened polling stations after weeks of campaigning, reviving the #dogsatpollingstations trend. Votes will be cast from 7am to 10pm.
