Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has expressed his belief that the club has not shown confidence in him throughout his tenure, potentially obstructing his future prospects.
Despite loan periods at Preston, Schalke, and Mainz, Van den Berg has not played for Liverpool since a February 2020 FA Cup match against Shrewsbury.
Following a notable season at Mainz, Jurgen Klopp's former club, the 22-year-old desires to forge his own path, likely away from Liverpool, even with the arrival of fellow Dutchman Arne Slot at Anfield.
Reports from This Is Anfield indicate that Liverpool has set his valuation at £20 million, with Brentford and Southampton showing interest.
Discussing the valuation, Van den Berg conveyed to De Telegraaf his frustration over Liverpool's lack of confidence in him yet their apparent intent to impede his progress.
Liverpool acquired Van den Berg from PEC Zwolle at age 17, and he spent a year training with the team, alongside the Champions League and Premier League victors.
However, that was his sole complete season with the club before he advocated for loan moves to secure playing time.
The central defender stated, "I was certain I couldn't break into Liverpool's first team straight from PEC Zwolle. I could've remained at Liverpool for another year or two, but my desire to play was strong.
"I insisted on being loaned out, repeatedly, as I sensed continuous improvement and significant physical development."
Van den Berg also mentioned that Jordan Henderson and James Milner both saw him as 'ready' for the first team.
Feeling 'ready' himself, he recounted a positive discussion with the manager, who acknowledged receiving favorable reports. Van den Berg understood he wouldn't replace Van Dijk, Matip, or Konate but believed he could immediately follow them in the pecking order.
Upon being overlooked once more, he resolved, "Sort it out, I want to leave again."
De Telegraaf's report suggests that top Dutch clubs are keeping tabs on him, yet the likelihood of him joining Arne Slot appears slim.
