Jones scores on England debut, Kelleher saves crucial penalty

Curtis Jones marked his senior England debut with a goal on Thursday evening, as five Liverpool players took part in international duties.

Liverpool's midfielder Jones was chosen by Lee Carsley to start for England for the first time, contributing to the Three Lions' 3-0 win against Greece in Athens.

Jones scored the third goal of the UEFA Nations League game with a clever flick in the box, following an Ollie Watkins goal and an own goal by Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Reflecting on his impressive debut, Jones remarked, "I tried, I tried! The guys around also helped. I just played freely, with a smile on my face, enjoying it, and I'm glad I scored."

He further commented, "With a team like ours, I can push forward or drop back to get the ball and play. The guys support me, and some even encouraged me to advance. Jude [Bellingham] covered for me, so I took the chance to go forward and, fortunately, I scored."

Kostas Tsimikas played 56 minutes for Greece, while Jarell Quansah remained on the bench for England after his recent call-up from the U21 squad.

In other action, Republic of Ireland's goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher played a pivotal role in Dublin, saving a penalty in the 77th minute, securing a 1-0 victory over Finland following Evan Ferguson's early goal.

Reflecting on the penalty save and the match, Kelleher said, "Before he took the shot, I observed his run-up and relied on my instincts, which thankfully led me to choose the correct direction."

"In the first half, we might have been a bit lucky at times. The ball hit the post twice, but we also had solid defending and some crucial blocks, which are sometimes necessary. Fortunately, we managed to score an excellent goal and then focused on defending. Apart from the penalty, there weren't many other chances, so we can take away some positives."

Ibrahima Konate contributed to keeping a clean sheet as he played for France in their goalless draw against Israel in Paris.

Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister was taken off during the second half of Argentina's 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in the South American World Cup qualifiers.
