An often-overlooked former Liverpool player has been appointed as the new manager of Dortmund.

Sahin might not frequently come to mind for Liverpool fans, yet he is a well-regarded figure in European football, especially at Dortmund, where he took on the role of Terzic's assistant in January.

His impact has been significant enough that he has now been appointed the new Dortmund manager following Terzic's request to depart from the club.

Over the past six months, as an assistant coach, Sahin has been instrumental in leading Dortmund to their first Champions League final in 11 years, where they were defeated 2-0 by Real Madrid at Wembley.

Sahin had previously been a substitute in their last final, also a loss at Wembley, under the management of Jurgen Klopp in 2012. The former Turkiye international was with Liverpool for only five months during an 18-month loan agreement from August 2012.

Although Sahin was a technically skilled central midfielder, he struggled to quickly adjust to Premier League football, making 12 appearances and scoring three goals. Additionally, it was evident that he did not have a good relationship with the manager, as he later expressed relief, stating: "Thank God I have left Brendan Rodgers."

Sahin ended his playing career at Antalyaspor and then took on the role of manager. He attracted media attention in Turkey for protecting a referee from his own players following a 2-1 defeat to Fenerbahce.

Drama erupted in Antalya when Antalyaspor's Fernando scored an extraordinary goal from outside the box in the eighth minute of stoppage time. However, the assistant referee flagged for offside, and after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed due to Haji Wright being marginally offside.

As the match ended, the crowd expressed their discontent with the referee, Kadir Saglam, and his team. Sahin stepped onto the field to shield the officials from his players. After coaching Antalyaspor for two years, Sahin left for Dortmund in late 2023 to become an assistant manager to Terzic, alongside Sven Bender.
