Despite Liverpool rejecting an offer to sign Anthony Gordon before the Premier League's PSR deadline, Newcastle harbors concerns that his loyalty could shift.
On Saturday, it was revealed that Newcastle had proposed Gordon to Liverpool as they sought to comply with the Premier League's spending limits.
However, the potential transaction collapsed when the Saudi-owned club attempted to involve Jarell Quansah in the deal, which Liverpool, predictably, declined as they were not willing to part with their talented centre-back.
Nonetheless, Liverpool's interest in Gordon persists, and although they have sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to meet the spending requirements, Newcastle's willingness to negotiate over Gordon has become apparent.
Chris Waugh, The Athletic's Newcastle correspondent, reported that the offer was made in a state of urgency as they sought to generate funds.
"There are ongoing concerns internally that he may be persuaded," Waugh added.
Liverpool had previously shown interest in Gordon, who, having been a Liverpool fan since childhood and formerly part of their youth system before being released at age 11, would likely be interested in the move.
The feasibility of such a deal this summer is uncertain, given the existing depth on the left wing, with players like Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez already in place. However, the situation could change depending on whether Diaz remains, especially with Barcelona showing interest.
Waugh also disclosed that Liverpool had previously made a preliminary inquiry about Gordon, indicating potential plans to develop their left-wing options.
The once-controversial act of players moving between Liverpool and Everton has become more accepted, with Conor Coady and Rafa Benitez having made the switch in recent times.
Newcastle has clearly communicated their position on the matter.
At 23 years old and qualifying as a homegrown player, Gordon's future remains a topic of speculation.
