Chris Stuart

Goalkeeper Luke Hewitson has inked a deal with a new club just over a week after his Liverpool contract ended, moving to League Two. Among the ten players Liverpool released at season's end, Hewitson is the third to secure a new team.

The 19-year-old, who joined from Sunderland in 2019, spent five years in Merseyside, becoming a well-regarded figure in the academy and frequently participating in first-team training. His notable loan period with Stalybridge Celtic last season – appearing 42 times for the non-league team – drew attention from several clubs.

League Two's Fleetwood Town has won Hewitson's commitment, with the young player starting in their development squad. He signed a two-year contract this week and will join Fleetwood's academy for pre-season training.

Hewitson may play as soon as Tuesday night in a friendly against Squires Gate, followed by more warmup matches against Barnoldswick Town, Blackburn U21s, Clitheroe, Thornton Cleveleys, Bolton U21s, Leeds U21s, and Atherton Collieries.

Hewitson expressed gratitude to Liverpool on Instagram after his release, acknowledging the chance they gave him.

"Working alongside some of the greatest players over the last five years has been an honor," he stated.

"Thanks to all the players, coaches, and behind-the-scenes staff for making this chapter of my career so memorable."

Other young ex-Liverpool players like Melkamu Frauendorf (Hannover 96) and Francis Gyimah (Stoke) have also found new clubs.

Mateusz Musialowski is drawing Serie A interest, and Adam Lewis is linked with Newport County and Tranmere Rovers.

Niall Osborne, Cody Pennington, and Nathan Giblin, also released, are still negotiating with potential new clubs.
